All students must take the ACCUPLACER exam before enrolling in courses at any CUNY community college. The ACCUPLACER has three sections; Math, Reading and Writing. If they fail any of those sections, the student must take the corresponding remedial course his or her first semester in college. Students do not earn any credits for remedial courses and cannot move on in college until they pass them. So remediation can cost students a lot of time and money.
In the CTA, College Skill Building, Writing and College Math curricula are both specifically designed to help students get past this hurdle. Right now, more than three quarters of CUNY Prep students who complete the At Home in College courses test out of the writing (83%) and reading (75%) remedial classes and another 70% percent pass out of Math 1.
